What are the benefits of selenium?

Selenium is a mineral found in fish and other seafood, meat, eggs and in very high quantities in Brazil nuts. Selenium is important for a variety of processes in the body, including normal sperm production. It's also beneficial for a healthy prostate.

Selenium is necessary for the normal function of the immune system and cardiovascular system, and has been shown to be important for thyroid function. It also contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and nails.

Selenium also has a role in protecting cells from oxidative stress. It is incorporated into proteins to make selenoproteins – these are antioxidant enzymes, which help to protect cells from damage by free radicals. This, along with selenium's contribution to maintaining a healthy thyroid, means it is important for muscle growth and recovery. Read more about selenium and muscle growth.

Types of selenium supplements

Healthspan offers a range of selenium supplements, with tablets and capsules for a variety of needs.

Selenium for nail and hair growth

Several of Healthspan's selenium supplements are targeted at hair and nail health. Our simple Selenium, which comes in a pack of 240 tablets, is our strongest selenium supplement. It offers 200 micrograms (363% of the nutrient reference value, NRV) of selenium in an organically bound yeast form, which is easily absorbable.

This selenium is combined with antioxidant vitamins A, C and E to further support the immune system, and is suitable for both men and women.

Replenish Hair & Nails 50 Plus (60 tablets) contains grape seed and bamboo extracts, which provide 110 micrograms (200% NRV) of selenium, alongside various other nail and hair-strengthening vitamins and nutrients such as biotin and zinc. This supplement is specially formulated for peri- and post-menopausal women.

Both products are suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Elite selenium supplements

Healthspan's Elite range is designed for competing athletes, and the Elite Gold A-Z Multivitamin (120 tablets) contains 55 micrograms (100% NRV) of selenium, along with a comprehensive range of other vitamins and minerals, to support muscle growth and recovery, immunity and overall health. This supplement is also suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Other selenium supplements

Saw Palmetto Complete (90 capsules) is formulated to support men's health, and contains 27.5 micrograms (50% NRV) of selenium, alongside zinc, to support sperm production, fertility and sexual health.

Several other Healthspan supplements contain selenium, including MultiVitality 70 Plus (120 tablets), MultiVitality for Vegans and Vegetarians (120 tablets), MultiVitality Pro (90 tablets), MultiVitality Gold (90 or 180 tablets) and MultiVitality 50 Plus (90 or 180 tablets). These supplements contain either 55 micrograms or 110 micrograms of selenium. With the exception of MultiVitality 50 Plus, all are suitable for vegans.

Should you take selenium?

Selenium is an important nutrient, and plays a vital role in maintaining immunity, thyroid function and healthy hair and nails. It's thought that many of us are not getting enough selenium, due to reduced amounts in the soil and therefore food, so a supplement may be beneficial.

Always consult your GP before taking a new supplement.
