Heart Health Supplements

Our heart plays a central role in our health, and keeping it healthy means a better quality of life and improved health outcomes. Experts recommend maintaining a healthy diet (particularly with regards to limiting our intake of saturated fat and salt), doing regular exercise and keeping cholesterol levels within a healthy range.

For many, supplements can also help. The most popular include plant sterols (1.5-3g per day has been shown to lower blood cholesterol levels), B vitamins (namely vitamin B1, which contributes to the normal function of the heart) and omega 3 fatty acids (found in particularly high quantities in oily fish).

Healthspan's heart health range

Every Healthspan product is expertly researched and formulated to include the highest-quality ingredients in the quantities you need them. To help make heart health easy, Healthspan also provides bundle offers and multi-supplement packs for those who are looking for comprehensive heart health support at great-value prices.

The importance of heart health

The heart sits at the centre of our cardiovascular system, pumping blood throughout the body – supplying oxygen to muscles and organs, and removing toxins and waste. Keeping the heart healthy brings a lower risk of cardiovascular problems, including heart disease and stroke.

Particularly important is cholesterol. This comes in two types: LDL and HDL. LDL is often referred to as 'bad' cholesterol, as it can clog your arteries, reduce blood flow and increase the risk of heart disease. When experts talk about cholesterol in a negative sense, this is the form they are referring to.

HDL cholesterol can have a protective effect in the body, as it helps to remove LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream for processing. It's important for health that you have enough HDL cholesterol and not too much LDL cholesterol.

Heart health supplements, including plant sterols to reduce the body's cholesterol, should always be used in conjunction with a healthy diet and lifestyle to maximise the benefits.

What supplements are good for heart health

Heart health is complex, so many of Healthspan's products include a range of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to help provide the most comprehensive nutritional support. Vitamin B1, omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin K2 are some of the most common additions, as they help to support the heart in several different ways.

Vitamin B1 – also known as thiamine – contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism and the normal function of the heart.

Vitamin K2 contributes to the maintenance of normal blood clotting, it also regulates the transport and distribution of calcium in the body.

Although vitamin K2 can be found in the diet, particularly in green leafy vegetables, but modern food preparation and storage methods mean that most Western diets are deficient. It's therefore useful to take vitamin K2 in supplement form, particularly for those concerned with their heart health.

DHA and EPA are two important omega 3 fatty acids that contribute to the maintenance of normal heart function,1 normal blood pressure,2 and normal blood triglyceride levels.3 This is important because triglycerides (the most common type of fat in the body), circulate in the blood and, if levels are too high, can raise the risk of heart disease and stroke.

As our body cannot make DHA or EPA in sufficient volumes, they need to be acquired through diet (most commonly in oily fish) or taken as a supplement.

Natural heart health supplements

Healthspan also provides supplements sourced from food or food compounds, including artichoke, garlic and Fruitflow® (sourced from tomatoes). These are a helpful way of securing concentrated benefits in a single tablet or capsule.

Artichoke

Healthspan's Artichoke supplement is a recommended perfect partner for Plant Sterols to help amplify its benefits. Taken alone, Artichoke also contributes to normal blood lipid levels.4

Healthspan's artichoke supplement provides 360mg of high-quality artichoke extract (providing 7.2mg cynarin) per tablet.

Garlic

Testament to its popularity, Healthspan offers three garlic products – Garlic 800mg, Garlic 1,200mg and Black Garlic 2,000mg – to help maintain heart health, normal cholesterol levels and normal blood lipid levels.5

Healthspan's garlic products use a standardised garlic extract to provide a high yield of allicin (the active ingredient) to ensure every tablet delivers the same quality, along with added vitamin B1 to support cardiac function.6

Healthspan's premium Black Garlic is produced using a unique fermentation process, which removes the smell and helps distil garlic's positive effects on the heart. They're also rich in amino acids that are easy for the body to digest and absorb.

Vein-Vine

Sourced from a red grape vine that thrives in the Mediterranean, red vine leaf is the key ingredient in Healthspan's innovative Vein-Vine product. It contributes to good blood flow and can reduce the feeling of tired and heavy legs.7

Each tablet contains 360mg of natural red vine leaf extract (including 40% polyphenols), together with added vitamin B1 for additional heart health support and vitamin C to help collagen formation for normal blood vessel function.8

Circulease®

This advanced formulation contains patented ingredient Fruitflow®, derived from the seeds of tomatoes, which is clinically proven to support normal platelet aggregation. By maintaining the smoothness of the blood's platelets, Fruitflow® prevents them from sticking together and forming clots.

Unique to Healthspan, Circulease® also contains B vitamins and potassium to support your heart function and contribute to normal blood pressure.

Lecithin

Found throughout the body and in high concentrations in the brain and liver, lecithin contributes towards the production of choline, which in turn contributes to normal lipid metabolism (allowing the body to digest and use fats for energy), as well as the maintenance of normal liver function.9

Healthspan's Lecitihin is sourced exclusively from non-GMO soy beans, one of the most concentrated and refined sources, to create a superior heart health option.

Coenzyme Q10 & supplements for heart health

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is another substance found throughout the body. In fact, it's found in every one of our cells.

In the 1950s, scientists discovered coenzyme Q10 inside mitochondria: a piece of cell 'machinery' that helps to convert food into energy. As a result, CoQ10 is often referred to as the body's spark plug. It is found in particularly high concentrations in the heart.

Many people start taking CoQ10 as a supplement from mid-life, as although CoQ10 occurs naturally, our levels decline with age. This might be one factor in helping you decide which strength CoQ10 to take.

All Healthspan CoQ10 products contain the purest form, with vitamin B1 to support heart health and energy levels.10 The innovative rapeseed oil base ensures quicker absorption for optimum benefit.

With 200mg of pure CoQ10 per tablet, Coenzyme Q10 200mg is one of the strongest CoQ10 supplements available in the UK, so is perfect for those who want the optimum amount. Coenzyme Q10 100mg and Coenzyme Q10 60mg are also available.

Ubiquinol heart vitamins

Ubiquinol is closely related to CoQ10, which is why the two are often mentioned together.

Put simply, there are two types of coenzyme Q10; the oxidised version (called ubiquinone) and the non-oxidised option, ubiquinol, which is the most absorbable form. Ubiquinol supplements are particularly popular with those over the age of 50, who may start to notice the effect of falling CoQ10 levels.

As a result of this superior absorption, the 100mg of ubiquinol in Healthspan's Ubiquinol supplement is equivalent to 280mg of coenzyme Q10. Together with vitamin B1, which is also provided in this formulation, it is ideal for those who want to support their cardiac function and energy levels with just one daily capsule.11

Ubiquinol Max – Healthspan's premium formulation – was created with the help of a leading cardiologist and contains the optimum combination of ingredients for heart health and energy.

Alongside a dose equivalent to 280mg of CoQ10, it contains sustainably sourced DHA and EPA omega 3 fish oil to help maintain normal blood pressure and blood triglyceride levels,12 vitamins B1 and C for further heart and energy support,13 plus a natural vitamin E complex. Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.

Supplements to lower cholesterol

Keeping our cholesterol at a healthy level is important because of the link between high cholesterol and an increased chance of heart attack and stroke. Plant Sterols are a way to lower cholesterol – but it's essential not to stop taking any prescribed medication (or altering your dose) before consulting a doctor.

Plant sterols come from vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, and seeds, but have a similar structure to the cholesterol made by the body. This allows them to compete for absorption, meaning that less of the cholesterol from our diet gets absorbed in the small intestine.

As a result, Plant Sterols can either keep cholesterol levels within a normal range, or help lower your blood cholesterol (depending on the dose you take),14 and therefore reduce the risk of developing coronary heart disease. To reduce high cholesterol, Healthspan's experts recommend three Plant Sterols tablets daily, providing 2400mg plant sterols.15

Plant Sterols can be taken alongside statins (as they work in a different way) or as a preventative measure before you have been prescribed medication.

Cholesterol-lowering bundle

Plant sterols are arguably the best-known supplement for lowering cholesterol, but its effects can be amplified further with the help of artichoke. These supplements work together to block cholesterol absorption, as well as reduce cholesterol production in the liver, so Healthspan has paired them together in a cholesterol bundle to help you get the best results for your heart health while saving money.

Heart health supplement multipacks

Choosing a multipack can be a great option for a comprehensive heart health supplement routine. The hard work has already been done: the optimum amounts of the right vitamins, minerals and nutrients are ready and waiting in one safe, easy-to-take product.
